Structuring, Managing and Leading an Effective Compliance Function - Course Outline

"Very well structured and informative course." Head of Compliance, National Savings

"Very interesting, well presented and very useful." Compliance Manager, Capital Home Loans Ltd

"Well balanced. I found the case studies useful." Compliance Manager, Vanquis Bank

Compliance functions must constantly adapt to meet the challenges of an ever changing risk, business and regulatory environment.

If you are managing all or some aspects of the compliance function, how can
you structure and target your resources most cost-effectively, manage your policy, monitoring and reporting obligations and keep yourself, your staff and the business up to date with the latest regulatory expectations?

Led by a highly experienced former Compliance Director, this practical course will help you answer this and other recurring questions, such as:

How should audit, compliance and risk co-ordinate activities?
• What data should inform your decision about how many people you need?
• Should you have a separate policy team?
• Should monitoring be separate or done with the audit team?

This one day workshop is led by a very experienced past compliance director who has a practical and successful track record of building compliance teams in different businesses. Bob White will use case studies and syndicate exercises to cover key elements of running a compliance function, including:

  • Designing a Compliance team structure to suit your people and business
  • Building and maintaining an effective and up to date monitoring programme
  • Getting the most from relationships with Risk and Audit functions
  • Establishing your compliance manual as a meaningful and valued resource
  • Making sure your compliance reporting meets the needs and expectations of
    senior management and the FSA

Who should attend?

This programme will benefit managers, directors and heads of Compliance and Regulatory Risk in any sector, as well as executives in Signficant Influence Functions with responsibilites for compliance. It will also be of value to Risk and Audit professionals who wish to gain an insight into how best to interact with this key function.

Training Approach

This course is focused on pragmatic, best practice approaches to the real life, everday challenges and decisions facing Compliance Management. Using a combination of trainer input and knowledge sharing with interactive syndicate work and case studies, it will define the fundamental elements required to build and maintain an effective compliance function. There will be ample opportunity for individuals to raise issues of most concern to their organisations.

Course Leader: Bob White

Bob White has over 25 years of experience in the banking and investment sectors. He worked as a compliance officer for 16 years and has set up and managed many compliance functions. He worked at Lloyds TSB, where he was Group Compliance Officer, and was a Compliance Director at Hill Samuel, Jardine Matheson and Credit Suisse. He has latterly become a compliance consultant helping companies to install risk based compliance monitoring programmes, write policies and procedures and develop their compliance strategies.

Bob’s experience allows him to recognise the practical issues that arise in structuring the compliance function, responding to change in the business and in the approach of the regulator, and working with related control functions.

Bob has served on various industry regulatory committees and working parties including at the British Bankers’ Association, the Investment Management Association and the FSA. He has spoken frequently on compliance and risk management subjects. He has a Masters degree in Economics of Finance and is a Fellow of the Compliance Institute.
