Business Improvement Techniques Programme - BIT

CTP can help you introduce a Lean culture, cut costs and increase efficiency by running B.I.T. programmes in your company. Tangible cost savings can be identified within sixteen weeks of starting. Employees can even be NVQ qualified. Click here for more benefits.

CTP’s Business Improvement Techniques programme – going “Lean” - is a means of improving business performance in an organisation through continuous improvement techniques. Lean is just another word for a common-sense efficiency-based approach to structuring your business processes and forces your company to take a more detailed look at internal data flows and to evaluate the company's position in its market. B.I.T calls for defining your company goals based on customer needs and product focus. It’s a methodology that helps you improve your morale, quality, delivery and cost, and particularly productivity – it’s aimed at transforming corporate culture.

The Programme
The B.I.T. programme has two routes, called pathways, and you pick the one most suitable to your organisation. Opportunities to overlap with the other pathway exist when delegates select their option modules.

  1. Process Pathway has an emphasis on the application of lean principles. Lean is about the elimination of all process waste with an emphasis on increasing speed and reducing lead time.
  2. Quality Pathway has an emphasis on the application of six sigma principles. Six Sigma has an emphasis on variation reduction and defect elimination.

Employees train in cohorts of 6-20 people. After initial training in tools and techniques (the theory), they are split into smaller teams and given a project (in the workplace) on which to work, using their new learning. Training is done on site and involves action learning. There is minimum disruption to work. Each cohort programme lasts about sixteen weeks.

The following outcomes are achieved by delegates at the end of the programme:

  • understand the concept of continuous improvement
  • understand how, by eliminating waste, reducing defects and organising the workplace, there can be a dramatic improvement in business performance
  • gain an awareness of the most up-to-date management thinking
  • learn to identify what needs improving, how to get to the root cause of a problem and how to go about improving it
  • achieve a safer organised workplace.

CTP can help your employees gain a nationally recognised qualification. NVQ qualifications in B.I.T. can be taken at levels 2, 3, and 4:

  • Level 2 – is for the practitioners in the work force, the day –to-day operational staff. Those at the coalface.
  • Level 3 – is for the CHAMPIONS of the scheme. They understand the concepts of ‘Lean’ and how they are most applicable to the organisation. They tell team leaders what to do. They will be seen as improvement managers.
  • Level 4 – is for the facilitators of change. They are idea makers and see where the projects are to be worked on.

B.I.T. is an unusual NVQ in that the levels are not linked to management levels i.e. operator, supervisor, and manager. While a candidate undertaking level 4 will usually be a manager, this is not necessarily the case, and those doing level 3 may not be ‘superior’ to those doing level 2. On average, 90% of delegates become qualified.

NVQ Funding
B.I.T. NVQs may be funded through the Government’s ‘Train to Gain’ scheme or EU grants. This can completely offset a company’s financial commitment to the assessment part of the qualification. Ask CTP for details of eligibility.
